Grayson S. Norquist, MD, MSPH
Professor and Chairman
Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior
Dr. Grayson S. Norquist joined the Medical Center faculty Dec. 1, 2004,
as professor of psychiatry and human behavior and chairman of the department.
Prior to his appointment here, Dr. Norquist served as director of the
Division of Services and Intervention Research at the National Institute
of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, Md., and as an associate clinical
professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University.
Dr. Norquist received the BA with special distinction from the University
of Mississippi in 1974 and earned the MD magna cum laude at the University
of Mississippi Medical Center in 1978. He took postgraduate training in
categorical medicine at the UCLA Department of Internal Medicine from
1978-1979, and completed residency training in psychiatry at the UCLA
Department of Psychiatry, where he was chief resident from 1984-1985.
A Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the UCLA Medical Center from
1985-1987, Dr. Norquist earned the MSPH at the UCLA School of Public Health
in 1989.
Board-certified in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry, Dr. Norquist began
his medical career as a general practitioner in Los Angeles, Calif., from
1979-1982. After completing his psychiatry residency and fellowship training,
he joined the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine in 1987 as an assistant
dean for student affairs. He was also director of the Mental Health Services
for Physicians in Training Program at UCLA, an assistant clinical professor
of psychiatry in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and a consultant for
the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, Calif., from 1987-1990.
Dr. Norquist joined the NIMH in 1990 as deputy director of the Division
of Applied and Services Research. In 1992, he became deputy director of
the Division of Epidemiology and Services Research and associate director
for services research at NIMH. In 1998, he was appointed director of the
Division of Services and Intervention Research, a division responsible
for clinical, prevention and services research at NIMH. During Dr. Norquist's
tenure as director, the division initiated the largest clinical trials
ever conducted in mental health.
Dr. Norquist has served on the editorial board of the Archives of General
Psychiatry and the Journal of Mental Health Policy and Economics. The
author of numerous refereed journal articles and book chapters, he has
received various national government and public awards, including the
NIH Director's Award, the NIH Special Service Award, and the National
Alliance for the Mentally Ill Exemplary Psychiatrist Award.
