Fourth year elective rotations: We welcome and encourage medical students to do elective rotations in psychiatry during their fourth year. Fourth year medical students who wish to rotate in psychiatry are encouraged to use their creativity and design a rotation that would be of most interest to them. Subinternships are available in medical psychiatry, general adult psychiatry, inpatient and outpatient child psychiatry, adult outpatient psychiatry, sleep disorders medicine, addiction psychiatry, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. Other options for fourth year elective rotations include rotationing at Whitfield Hospital, which is a local state mental hospital; rotations with community- based psychiatrists in Mississippi; and rotations with psychiatrists at other medical centers in the United States or abroad. Fourth year students may be interested in doing a research project or writing a journal article in an area of interest. Other possibilities as part of a fourth year elective rotation include attending and participating in national psychiatry conferences such as annual American Psychiatric Association (APA) meetings or local (state) APA meetings. Fourth year elective rotations must have departmental approval.
